| Professor John McCloskey a> |
Professor John McCloskey, Geophysics Research Group, University of Ulster, Coleraine
John McCloskey was born and brought up in Derry City and studied Geology at Queen’s University Belfast before completeing his PGCE in Physics and teaching physics in secondary schools for 10 years. He was awarded the Institute of Physics Physics Teacher of the Year Award for 1992, the same year he completed his PhD in Geophysics at the University of Ulster. In 1993 he was appointed as Lecturer in Numerical Simulation of the Environment at the University of Ulster and was given a personal chair in Geophysics in 2002. His main research interests are in earthquake processes and in particular in the communication between earthquakes by stress interaction. For the last 5 years he has focused his effort almost excusively on the unfolding sequence of large earthquakes in western Sumatra and has become involved with efforts to prepare vulnerable populations for future events in the this area.
