Dr Stephen Newton, Senior Conservation Officer, BirdWatch Ireland

“Irish seabirds: what we know, what we don’t know, and opportunities”

Dr Newton has worked at BirdWatch Ireland (BWI) since 1996, being principally responsible for seabird research, monitoring and colony management. This includes overseeing the conservation effort at Rockabill, Europe’s premier Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii colony just off the Dublin coast. Stephen also oversees the long-tern Chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax research programme and his remit includes input to BWI work on upland habitats and their birds, including birds of prey, especially Hen Harrier and Red Grouse, Golden Plover, Dunlin and Ring Ouzel. He is a member of the all-Ireland team responsible for the ‘Birds of Conservation Concern’ process which reviews the Red, Amber and Green lists for Ireland and is a member of the Irish Rare Breeding Birds Panel. In his ‘spare time’ Stephen looks after the BWI Library and is editor of the journal Irish Birds.
